In TurboTax Online, state withholding tax not already entered on a W-2 or 1099 may be entered as follows:
JamesG1,
Thanks for your response.
If I go that route I get a message that the state return cannot be filed electronically. Is there a way to have the State withholdings appear in the SSA-1099 input screen?
FYI - I am using TurboTax Premiere on a Windows desktop.
Thanks again.
No, it's so uncommon for state withholding to appear on the SSA-1099 and other documents which is why there is a specific entry to make sure it is included.
It's quite likely the state wants to see the withholding which is why the e-file is prohibited. Be sure to make a copy of your SSA-1099 to send with your state return and keep a copy for yourself.
Hi DianeW777,
Thanks for the reply.
Can't imagine why others do not use state w/holding in social security payments, but since it is an option, can I request this be added to TurboTax so I can continue to file electronically.
Wow...I never realized that SS ever allowed state tax withholding.
Certainly they don't include any state $$ options on their withholding W-4V forms, and I spent 10-15 minutes mucking around the SS website and didn't find anything about it.
TTX doesn't even have any fields on their SS worksheet for state withholding...so the "workaround" would be the only way to record it.
So, perhaps it's so rare because no one can find the form to initiate it.
(of course, my state doesn't tax SS, so it isn't really an issue for me)
Hi SteamTrain,
I got the option when I first started getting SS last year. You can update it anytime on your SSA account online.
Not sure if you are a TurboTax employee, but I request that the state withholding field be added to the SSA-1099 in TurboTax. As I have already filed, I am going to have to file an amended state return since this was not picked up. I also want to continue to file my taxes electronically.
Thanks.
