This information can be found where you entered the social security income. To return there, follow these steps:

  • From inside TurboTax, in the search box, enter social security income and
  • Click the Jump to link in the search results.
  • Check what has been entered to make sure it matches what you received on Form SSA-1099.

This is likely referring to Form 1040 page 1, Box 6a, the total entered, which should be Box 5 of your SSA-1099, and Box 6b, which is automatically calculated based on how much other income you are reporting. It is the portion of the social security that is taxable.

Your taxable SS is shown in line 6b of your Federal form 1040.

The proper amount that ends up on line 6b of the Federal 1040 will only be properly shown after you have entered absolutely ALL sources of income in the Federal section.

I understand that but on line 3in the social security worksheet  it shows the total income which includes the unemployment amount as well which the calculation is based on. The unemployment amount is not being excluded as it is from your total income therefore you r still being taxed on the unemployment amount.

If I totally exclude the unemployment amount from TT line 3 then shows the amount less the unemployment amount. thanks

Ahh...for that.

I don't know if the calculation for taxable SS was also changed to eliminate up-to 10,200 of Unemployment income or not.    That part of the calculation didn't necessarily change.  Someone at TTX would have to interface with the IRS to see if a change there is also envisioned....might take a couple weeks to get that changed in the software......if needed.
