Should i have put my pension amount on line8 instead of what i did by putting it in line 9. my pension is not an ira?

i am thinking that because of this possible error that i will be getting a refund that is not due to me.

Pensions are reported to you on a 1099-R and must be on the 1040 form line 5.

The 1099-R for a pension will not have the IRA box checked.

Enter a 1099-R here:

Federal Taxes,
Wages & Income
(I'll choose what I work on - if that screen comes up)
Retirement Plans & Social Security,
IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R).

OR  Use the "Tools" menu (if online version left side) and then "Search Topics" for "1099-R" which will take you to the same place.

Be sure to choose which spouse the 1099-R is for if this is a joint tax return.
Be sure to pick the correct 1099-R type: Standard 1099-R, CSA-1099-R, CSF-1099-R, RRB-1099-R.

[NOTE: When you get to the "Your 1099-R Entries" screen where you can add another 1099-R, use "continue" to keep going as there are additional interview questions after that screen in most cases. You can always return as shown above.]

I have no line 5 as you said on my 1040 return...I have a 1040-SR, will that make a difference.  I only have 5a and a 5b  and on the column on the right  my pension amt is in 4b.  so confused

Line 5  consists of  5a and 5b.    The taxable amount of the pension would be on line 5b.

If it is on 4b then you must have checked the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box in error  unless it is checked on your 1099-R, in which case the 1099-R is for an IRA and not a pension.
