Should I check "Retired" or "Employed" when asked to indicate my employment status on December 31 if I am both retired and employed?

Your choice.  The occupation is only used for statistical purposes

You can choose either, depending on whether you spend more time being retired or employed.  The IRS just uses this as a kind of census data.
