My wife reached 70 1/2 in November, 2019, so her first RMDs were to be taken in 2019 (Based upon 12/31/2018 values). This was done for one of her IRA accounts. In late January, 2020, we were notified of another account she had totally forgotten about. We took the required RMD on March 9, 2020 so it would be taken before April 1, 2020. Do we report any of this on the 2019 tax return (not yet filed)? If "yes", where/how and how do we show the RMD taken prior to the 4/1/2020 deadline? Any other comments appreciated.
No, you do not report the RMD taken in March 2020 on your 2019 tax return. It will be reported next year together with the RMD for 2020 which has to be taken by December 31, 2020.
There is nothing to report about that RMD in 2019 as the IRS (and TurboTax) know that your wife has until April 15, 2020 to take it.
