Processing CalSTRS 1099-R form in Utah

Started receiving a CalSTRS pension. Live in Utah.

Box 1 Gross Distribution has an amount

Box 2a Taxable Amount has the same amount

Box 4 Federal Income Tax Withheld has an amount

Box 7 Distribution Code has 7

Box 14 State Income Tax Withheld has $0.00

Box 15 State/Payer's State No. has CA 803-2926-1

There is no Box 16 State Distribution

How do I process this in TT for Federal and Utah state taxes?

I know TT requires a state number. Do I put UT in for the state and some number for the State Payer's No, so that TT will process it for UT?

Thank you.

Yes, the CalSTRS is taxable only in the state of Utah since that is that state in which you reside. You can remove the state ID number in Box 15 and the 0.00 in Box 16 and leave that entire section blank since you have no tax obligation to the state of California unless you were a part-year resident of CA in 2022.

Thank you DaveF1006 for the good info. Does TT know to apply this to Utah taxes if UT is not listed and Box 16 is filled out with the total? And TT does not let you list a state without a state number. There is no state number for CalSTRS for Utah. Thank you again.

And I have been exclusively a Utah resident for many years.

Yes, this will properly flow through the TurboTax program to your Utah return as retirement income.

The box 15 state ID is only necessary if state tax were withheld (box 14).

Retirement income, such as pension income and income from retirement accounts, are  subject to Utah's state flat income tax of 4.95%.

As long as you enter your Form 1099-R correctly and answer the follow-up prompts it will be properly reported on your Utah state return.

To view your State Return in TurboTax:

  • Select Tax Tools in the left menu (if you don't see this, select the menu icon in the upper-left corner).
  • With the Tax Tools menu open, you can then:
  • Select Print Center and then Print, Save, or Preview This Year's Return to preview your entire return, including all forms and worksheets (you may be asked to register or pay first).
  • View only your 1040 form by selecting Tools. Next, select View Tax Summary in the pop-up, then Preview my 1040 in the left menu.
