On my 1099-R Statement of Annuity box 2a the taxable amount is listed as UNKNOWN. I an retired CSRS federal retiree. What should I do?

Turbotax doesn't seem able to address this problem.

Leave box 2a blank.

If you didn't make any contributions to this account, 100% of your distribution will be taxable

If you made nondeductible contributions to this account, you'll have to calculate how much of your distribution is taxable. TurboTax will calculate the taxable portion of your distribution using based on additional information.

You'll need to provide:

- the start date of the annuity.

- your cost of the plan (usually reported in box 5 or 9b)

- number of months payments were received

- how much of your cost you've already recovered tax free (from your 2023 worksheets, if applicable)
