When entering my NJ state information, running error check and I get the above error message. it was a 1099R, distributing money to my Bank account to pay for tuition... both 4a and 4b say 0... any suggestions??
The issue here comes down to is this the first year of withdrawal from the IRA? If yes there should be a number in 4a. If not the first year of withdrawal there should be a number in 4b. Line 4a and 4b are for contributions to the IRA. Contributions to the IRA are taxed on the state level are taxed at the time of contribution (not excluded from income). For this reason only earnings should be taxed at withdrawal.
Thanks. It’s a 1st time withdrawal. I’ve tried manually overriding it and nothing works. I even deleted it from my fed forns and reentered. I was never asked if it was 1st time or not. No idea how to correct it
Once you have gone completely through the NJ return you will hit a landing page that gives yo the option to go over NJ again. Once you hit this option select it.
You will eventually come to a page that says IRA distribution for you.
The next page says IRA Information for You and asks if it is the first year of withdrawal and account information.
I have the same issue. I made a first time withdrawal from an IRA. It was a rollover from a 403b account and the contributions were previously taxed in NJ. At first I erroneously selected "no" for the question about first year for withdrawal, but then went back and changed my answer to "yes" and then entered the amount previously taxed. However, I still get the error "Pensions, Annuities, and IRAs Wks - TP: Part A, Line 4a and Part A, Line 4b should not both be entered." Line 4a has the correct amount; line 4b is 0. TurboTax will not let me efile the return, and I can't delete the form and start over because I've already selected and paid for efile. I have been through the whole return several times and nothing changes.
If 4a has the correct amount, you must clear (not 0) Part B lines 1-7,
conversely if 4b is not zero you must clear (not 0) 4a.
Note: 4a is used only the first time you enter data. In subsequent years you must use 4b.
Line 4b was 0. However, it has to be blank, and to do that requires overriding the field. I received excellent advice from TurboTax telephone support to instruct me how to do that.
If you use 4a again, you may get away with it, but you are invalidating your unrecovered contribution history (NJ Worksheet C aka Turbotax Wks Part B)
You need to keep all years worksheet C for your record; NJ may ask for them if you are audited.
The only way to clear it, at least on the Mac desktop version, is to use the override command and then clear the 0 from the field. Field 4b had to be blank.
Thank you all! I had the same issue. When I went back through the NJ IRA screen I found that both first time and not first time radio buttons were on. This was probably due to entering info in both 4a and 4b when dealing with the error checker.
As lynn52245 noted I needed to use the override to space out the zero that was in 4b. I didn't understand how to utilize the override and right clicked over 4b hoping to cut it the info from the field. That's when I saw an option to "override". Cut didn't work but override allowed me to clear the field.
I can read. However, I can't clear the zero form line 4b. I keep getting an error in the final check. Thanks for nothing...
line 4b and other associated lines in the work sheet have to be EMPTY, not zero, if you are using 4a.
