My wife received two different Forms SSA-1099 - Social Security Benefit Statements. Do we add the figures together?

You should examine them closely and be sure that one is not a 'corrected' version.  It would be unusual, but not impossible to receive two SSA-1099 for the same person.

If one is not a correction for the other, you can add the like-numbered boxes together to enter the amounts into your return.

I don't see any note that says "corrected" on either form.  However I noticed that one of the forms has a previous address for us, and the claim numbers on the two forms are different (one is my wife's social security number, and the other is mine!).  Any further thoughts?

Thanks, Steve

Only report income amounts she actually received.   If the forms are not correct, contact the Social Security Administration and make sure they are corrected.   Do not double report her income.

If she changed from getting benefits on you then her or vise versa then getting 2 forms is normal ... just add up the 2 box 5s.

If she received spousal benefit and switched to her own benefit during the year, she would have received two SSA-1099's.
