My spouse was unemployed for 6 months when his H1B expired in 2018. Will we get any kind of additional tax return due to this?

I was employed during this time but my spouse was not. Does it make any difference?

You do not get any tax break for being unemployed.

You can file jointly and your refund will depend mainly on your income and the amount of tax withheld from your forms W-2.
