My husband died and I inherited his 401K. I rolled it all to an IRA. Why is the program telling me that I had to take an RMD? The 1099R is in my name.

My husband died in October. I inherited the 401K as surviving spouse. I rolled it all to an IRA  and I received a 1099R in my name indicating in box 7 (4G) for death with rollover. The tax program is asking me how much of that was an RMD but since I did not withdraw any of it, I put zero. Then it wants to know what natural disaster I experienced to not have taken an RMD. Also, his company switched management of his 401K fund  mid year. I got 2 1099Rs for him for the same 401K - one from each management company. His benefits dept. told me all of the mandatory RMDs for the year were met within the 1st 6 months (while under Vanguard) so the 2nd half of the year, (Northern Trust) none would have been required to be taken out. So for the first one I answered yes to RMD, but the 2nd I answered no.... the second one (where I answered no to the RMD) is also where the inherited 401K was transferred from.

The RMD question is automatically asked if you or the deceased would be over 70 1/2.  If so just answer yes, it was all a RMD.

The answer to the question does not go on your tax return, it is simply to make sure you do not owe any penalty for not taking the RMD or use it for an ineligible rollover.

In the case of a 4G distribution the question is meaningless.

Why is Qualified Disaster Distribution appearing even though i said no?
