My home state of Utah has a new Social Security Benefits Credit for 2022, however Turbo Tax does not let me claim this. What can I do?

Please print out your forms to see if you received the Social Security Benefits Credit (SSBC). You may have received the credit but

  • You don't have any Utah income tax therefore the SSBC will not be refunded to you since the credit is nonrefundable.
  • You may have Utah income tax therefore the SSBC was applied to the amount to reduce it to zero and any excess is not refunded to you since the refund is not refundable.

I entered information into TurboTax trying to recreate what you are experiencing. TurboTax did calculate the SSBC, on Form TC-40A. The SSBC was used to zero out my Utah income tax. The SSBC is nonrefundable so the excess over the amount of Utah income tax, will not be given as a refund.

Note: If you (and/or your spouse, if filing jointly) were born on or before Dec. 31, 1952, you may take a retirement credit of up to $450.

  • Because the maximum amount of this credit is $450 per individual, you (and/or your spouse) may qualify for a larger credit by taking the Social Security Benefits Credit (code AH).
  • You may only claim this credit for Social Security benefits included in adjusted gross income on this return.
  • You may not claim this credit if you (or your spouse, if filing jointly) claim the Retirement Credit (code 18).

@HelenC12 thank you so much for the reply. I checked the state schedule and there was nothing on there. Also we have 1560 in tax due. Can you tell me how you found the credit when you checked in that for me? I’ve submitted my state return and will need to amend it. I was not aware of the credit until afterwards. I went back in to file amended return and I can’t find that non refundable ssbc credit anywhere. Thanks for the help!!

There isn't a specific question where TurboTax asks you if you received the credit. As you're going through the UT state questions, TurboTax automatically created the credit when I entered the tax data, in the federal section of TurboTax.

Note: To see my "behind the scenes" calculations, I used the TurboTax CD\Download version. However, you should have the same worksheets, forms, schedules, as the CD\Download version.

We can't know all the details on your entire tax situation..

and I Can't know all the limitations.....BUT... one big limitation:

You should note that there can only be a UT credit, if line 6b on your Federal form 1040 has a $$ value in it.
