I filed my 2021 taxes in February and caught the mistake of over contribution. The vendor for my employer is Fidelity and they issued a check for the over contribution plus the interest in March of 2022. The over contribution should be taxed in 2021 tax year and the earnings taxed in 2022 tax year. But they will not send me the 1099Rs until Jan 2023. By that point I could still amend my 2021 return, but I'm afraid I'll owe double taxes on the 2021 overcontribution. I've caught and corrected the mistake, but for some reason they will not send me the form early and Turbo Tax will not let me file without the form information filled in. Help.
You can make an entry for a substitute form 1099-R and put the withdrawal amount in box 1and taxable amount in box 2(a). You will see an option to create a substitute form 1099-R on the screen that says Tell Us Which 1099-R You Have when you go to enter the form 1099-R. Code the substitute form 1099-R as "8" in box 7, for excess contributions plus earnings.
Thanks! I actually dug around more in Turbotax and if you go into the "income" section it lets you enter "misc" income. One of the options it gives you is for excess deferrals. It is pretty buried and the person from Turbo Tax did not know about it. But I found it and amended the return for 2021 which let me pay the taxes I owed for 2021. Now I'll get the 1099R for the earnings in 2022 which will go on my 2022 taxes. Thanks again.
