My dependent son received a 1099R from an insurance company. Does he have to file a 1040?

Thank you for your reply.  You have answered my Question completely.  Thank You.

It depends.  If your son is Single, under the age of 65, and has total income greater than $10,350, he is required to file a Tax Return.  If you claim your son as a Dependent, he would need to file if his total income was greater than $6,300.

Even if he isn't required to file a Tax Return, if there was any Federal Withholding or State Withholding, your son would want to file in order to get it refunded.
