My 2020 1099-R box 12 is "FATCA filing requirement", but I get an error on Turbo Tax that's showing box 12 as my "State Tax Withheld". Can someone help me with this?

Turbo Tax let me enter the information exactly as my 1099-R showed, but then I got an error when I was finishing up telling me I had a problem with it.  I'm wondering if the error message was in error.

I've heard of that error screen one time before, but have never had access to that exact error screen.

That error screen is in error itself, apparently no one at TTX noticed that they didn't update the box # for that error screen....should say either 14 or 14a  ..... the "a" part of 12a simply refers to the first line in the state withholding area of the form, since sometimes two state lines are needed when a person moves during the year.

As to the error itself.......make sure that the withholding $$ are the same as your box 14 on the paper form.  Occasionally, some folks double-key a digit, or stick a comma in for the decimal point.

Beyond that, a few states are touchy about what is in box 16, even if it is empty on your paper 1099-R....NY in particular requires that box 16 have a value greater than box 14....usually it must be entered to be the same as the value in box 2a (....or the Federally-taxable amount of box 1, if 2a is empty or undetermined).

You should probably delete the form and re-enter it...manually..

IF you truly  are using the "Online" software

1) box 12 is used for state withholding on a CSA- or CSF-1099-R, so you selected the wrong form type during the run-up interview...you need to select the standard 1099-R.

or if you are using the Desktop software

2) You are either using 2019 software...or desperately need to run a software update...boxes 12,13,14 on the 2019 1099-R forms were moved to boxes 14,15,16 for 2020

Hello Steam Train,

Thank you so much for responding so quickly.

I did enter all my information manually.  All the boxes matched up when I entered them and I carried on. Just as I thought I was finishing up, I got a message that I had an error that I had to review.  It showed box 12a with my state tax withheld dollar amount, but on my form 1099-R that amount is in box 14 for 2020. I looked back at my 2019 form and it was indeed in box 12 last year. Box 12a for 2020 shows "FATCA filing requirement".  I'm really confused because when I originally entered the information everything seemed ok, but then I got that really weird error message that doesn't make any sense. I have noticed a lot of other people having similar problems with Turbo Tax's 1099-R boxes not matching up with 2020's form.

Also, I'm using Turbo Tax on-line, so I shouldn't need updated software - correct?

Best regards!

I had the same problem after entering the required info for Calif. State tax withheld is box 12 NOT 14. Otherwise I get an error and have to go back to the form and change it myself.

My 1099R is the same as for 2019 and I use the online version with the most recent update. It seems there is a problem with TurboTax and it's prompting on what to fill in the boxes. Line 12 is for state tax withheld, not box 14. Box 14 is for state distribution. I didn't have that problem in previous years.

The new IRA-sanctioned standard 1099-R forms are changed for 2020.  Boxes 12,13,14 for 2019 forms are now numbered 14,15,16 in the software for the 2020 1099-R forms....and the same is used by the IRS itself for 2020.

IF your 2020 1099-R is still using boxes 12,13,14 for the state data...then that issuer screwed up and failed to update their forms for the new 2020 format.     (Unless you have a CSA-orCSF-1099-R which do use boxes 12,13,14  but those are different from plain 1099-R forms)

SOME retirement systems have screwed up their 1099-R forms for 2020 and did NOT update them to the approved new IRS box numbering.  All you can do is to read the Label of the (proper) 2020 1099-R software forms and compare to your 2020 paper forms...and transfer the $$ and numbers to the properly numbered software boxes where the subject of the box matches.

Then call your retirement  form issuer...and complain to them about improperly using boxes 12,13,14 this year...so they get it right next year.
