My 1099R does not have a box 16a. TT requires an entry not less than state tax withheld. Box 16 is blank. What should I do?

If both Box 14 (State Tax Withheld) and Box 16 (State Distribution) on your 1099-R form are blank, you can remove the state ID number from Box 15 (State/Payer's State No.). This will allow you to leave Boxes 14, 15, and 16 blank. This should allow TurboTax to proceed without requiring an entry in box 16.

Here's a brief explanation of the relevant boxes:

  • Box 14: State Tax Withheld - Shows the amount of state tax withheld from your distribution. If there is an entry here, TurboTax will expect an amount in Box 16
  • Box 15: State/Payer's State No. - Indicates the state and payer's state identification number
  • Box 16: State Distribution - Shows the portion of your distribution that is subject to state tax. If Box 16 is blank, you can delete the State ID number in Box 15
