You cannot file a state tax return for a state that does not have a personal income tax. You file the Utah state tax return as a part year resident.
Thank you. So the do I end up paying Utah income tax on my income for the entire year even though I was only there half the year.
No, you apportion your income to only pay on the wages you earned once you moved
That makes sense. Where do I do that? I did fill out the dates and the two states in the beginning. I did not see any other place to do this? The only place I can see is where it says to fill forms for both states but WA is not listed.
You will report that you lived in two states in My Info. You will list the dates you lived in each state. Then, when you work on your Utah tax return, you will apportion your income.
that makes sense and I have done that. Then it takes me to where I would pick 2nd state (which WA is not listed) so I went back then it takes me through the process but I don't see that it took of my WA income. Does that show up at the very end somehow? Hard to tell because I can't see the behind the scenes calculations to make sure it did not tax me on my entire income.
go to Tax Tools (bottom of the black column on the left), Tools, Utah Summary to see if the apportion was correct
the total gross amount for the year in the calculations - not just Utah amount. What do I need to change to the Utah amount?
Go through your Utah tax return. At a certain point, it will ask you to apportion
I did that and divided my income in half. but it still pulls all income to tax form. half should be WA and no state tax. uggg
It may be reporting your total income, but you may only be taxed on the portion. Column B will have the total income, Column A will have only your Utah portion. If this is not correct, I suggest you delete the Utah return, log out and try again
When I look at the form it has my gross income in the Utah Taxable Income spot. I can't see column B on the form it only shows one column.
You need to preview the form as I described in an earlier comment. The Utah Part Year Resident Tax Return has two columns, A and B
I went back and reviewed what you mentioned and the state tax only has one column on the Tax Summary. I must be missing something....
Don is correct. You do not need to file a Washington state tax return.
