It says I have a Form 5329, but I do not; how do I file the free version?

Did you have an early withdrawal from a retirement account where you were under the age of 59 1/2?  If so, then you have a 10% early distribution penalty and the Form 5329 will be included with your tax return.

To verify - What is the code in box 7 of your Form 1099-R?

Yes, as DoninGA points out, if you have an early distribution from a retirement account, you need Form 5329 and will not be able to complete your return in the free version.

If you are certain you don't need Form 5329, you can revert to the free version, but you will need to review and possibly re-enter some of your information.

  1.  Click on Tax Tools near the bottom of the left side menu.
  2. All the way at the bottom, select Switch to Free Edition.
  3. The next screen explains the program will keep most of your information, but you may need to re-enter some of it.
  4. Once you confirm that is what you want to do, you will be taken back to the beginning of the return and you will need to review and possibly re-enter some of your information.
