Yes.  There is a difference.  The Form SSA-1099 is for your social security benefit and Form 1099-R is your pension distribution.

To enter SSA-1099 in TurboTax online program, go to:

1.  After sign into your account, select Take me to my return

2.  In the Search box , at right upper corner, type in SSA-1099 , then Enter

3.  Select Jump to SSA-1099

4.  On screen, Social Security Benefit-Did you receive any Social Security benefits? select Yes and Continue

To enter your 1099-R information, go to:

1.  After sign into your account, select Take me to my return

2.  At right upper corner, in search box, type in 1099R, and Enter

3.  Select Jump to 1099R

4.  On screen Your 1099-R, answer Yes and select Continue

Ask the plan for another copy.  Or maybe you can log in to his account at the bank or broker, etc. and download a pdf of it.
