Is my retirement income from my W2 which only has box 12a (DD) 26878 supposed to have a box 1 amount? Mine is blank.

Retirement plan is checked in box 13

No. Your w2 reports many things. Code DD is for health coverage benefits from your employer. See W2 codes. It does not belong in box 1. 

The retirement plan box is checked if you are covered by a retirement plan at work..
