Is it possible to file married/separate and pay less taxes if one is on disability and the other makes over $80,000

I received a lump sum payment for two years prior with my disability in 2018. I thought they were holding taxes out but it turns out they didn't. My spouse also worked and made $80.000. We always hold out the highest amount possible to spread it out over the year to avoid paying taxes in the end. If I file Married/joint then we owe $6000+. but if I file separate we owe about half that.
