If I am following direction on Turbo tax it says Income that is received from a public pension or retirement fund , program or may be exempted is State of Georgia. My wife is a retired postal worker at 57 with civil service retirement. Is this exempt in Georgia.
Your wife's retirement pension is not exempt yet. Once she reaches age 62, she'll be eligible to claim the retirement income exemption for up to the exclusion amount. This is for all pensions, civil service retirement pensions as well.
The Georgia Department of Revenue website states the following:
"Taxpayers who are 62 or older, or permanently and totally disabled regardless of age, may be eligible for a retirement income adjustment on their Georgia tax return. Retirement income includes:
For married couples filing joint returns with both members receiving retirement income, the maximum adjustment for that year may be up to twice the individual exclusion amount. Retirement income exceeding the maximum adjustable amount will be taxed at the normal rate. See Form IT-511 to obtain the worksheet for calculating the maximum allowable adjustment."
