IRA RMD State withholdings incorrect

North Carolina state tax was withheld by mistake from my IRA RMD in 2024.  I became a full time resident in Florida Jan 1, 2024 and have no North Carolina income.

What course of action do I take to correct this and get this NC state tax withholding refunded to me.  I do not have to file a NC state tax return as I did not have any NC income and was not a resident in 2024.

Any help is greatly appreciated

You would have to prepare and file a NC Nonresident tax return.

After fully preparing the Federal one, you would go thru the NC-Nonresident interview, and during the income allocation phase, you would indicate that every income type was zero NC income.

NC might hold up the refund and send a letter asking questions about that...if they do, you'll have to provide them with bills, rental agreements....whatever needed to show you were in FL at the start of 2024...and beyond.
