IRA RMD Distribution timing

I turn 70 1/2 in Aug of 2017. If I took an IRA distribution that equals my RMD in May of 2017 (before I turn 70 1/2), would I be satisfying my distribution requirement for 2017?

Yes, it would satisfy your RMD requirement for 2017.

However, if your intent is to make a Qualified Charitable Distribution, QCDs can only be made after you actually reach age 70½.  A distribution transferred to charity in 2017 before you reach age 70½ would satisfy your RMD, but would not be a QCD and would have to be reported on Schedule A as a charitable contribution deduction instead.
