Don't put zero, just leave it blank. If the box says "unknown", that doesn't necessarily mean that the taxable amount is zero.
Thanks, that's what I did. Then there is a follow-up question: "You told us zero is taxable, do you want to change?" I did not enter zero, I left it blank. Do I need to go back and change anything?
Is "Taxable Amount Not Determined" checked in Box 2b of your 1099-R? If Box 2a says "unknown," that doesn't necessarily mean that the taxable amount is zero.
I'm away from my taxes right now and appreciate your answer. I use the Simple method and I think by answering those questions that may be all I need to do. Will check later about box 2b. Thanks again!
The OPM website provides a simple calculator to figure out how much is considered taxable income.
