If our only income is social security but withdrew from our retirement fund what do we do

if there was withholding on the retirement distribution, you would need to file to get it back if you owe no income taxes

 

you would also need to file for 2018 (or for 2019 in 2020) if

 

one-half of your social security benefits plus your other gross income and any tax-exempt interest is more than $25,000 ($32,000 if married filing jointly).
