if income was only 6000.00 and sold 3000.00 in stocks do I still have to file since its under required income for a single retired person?

It depends- if it is self-employment income, you are required to file if you make more than $400 because you must report and pay the self-employment tax.  Otherwise, you are below the filing threshold for a single person.
