If I worked for 6 months in 2023 then retired, do I list my former job as my occupation or do I show myself as retired

Makes no difference to your return but since you are reporting some work income use your occupation. 

Agreed ... it doesn't matter at all since it is only for statistical purposs... call yourself a domestic god/goddess if you wish and mess with the algorythm.
