If gross distribution is greater than state tax withheld, how do I remove error "State tax shouldn't be greater than gross distribution"?

I assume that you are referring to your form 1099-R.

You have this error because box 16 is blank or is filled with 0. In this case, fill box 16 with the amount shown in box 1 - Gross distribution.

Box is is already filled in with the gross distribution amount.

If you still have the error, after checking your 1099-R, you may want to try a few things.

  1. Check this link to see if this applies to you.  Why am I unable to enter my state distributions in my 1099-R?
  2. Delete the 1099-R and re-enter it.
  3. If  you are using TurboTax Online clear cache, etc.
  4. See the instructions below for 2 and 3 above.

In this situation, first please try clearing the cookies and cache.   It handles many issues that seem nonsensical on a regular basis with online activity.

  • Close your TurboTax return first.

Watch to be sure you are selecting 'all time' as example.  Do not use selections like 'last hour' for those browsers that give  you options.

Once this is complete open your return and try again.

Delete this form 1099-R.
