I was overpaid for my military retirement. I paid it back to the G but it still shows as taxable on my 1099R. How can I remove this as income because I paid it back?

Since the amount of your repayment was $3,000 or less, you won’t be able to claim a deduction for your repayment.

Repayments of $3,000 or less used to be deductible on your return as a miscellaneous itemized deduction.

However, for tax years beginning after 2017, you can no longer claim any miscellaneous itemized deductions

Please see the CAUTION under the Repayments section in the IRS’ Publication 525, Taxable and Nontaxable Income for more information.

Please clarify:

  • What year(s) were you overpaid?
  • What year(s) did you make the repayment(s)?
  • What was the amount you had to pay back?
  • And, what version of TurboTax are you using?

I was over paid $1100 in both dec 2020 and Jan 2021. I paid $2200  back in last week in 2022 for the total amount. My 2021 1099 only says $1100.
