I took more than the minimum distribution and returned the balance within 60 days. My brokerage statement shows the full amt. Where do I show the amount on my return?

You will enter the 1099R just as you received it.

You will then see a question, after the 1099R entry, "Was this withdrawal an RMD for 2016?" and then "How Much" and you will answer those questions, then

"What Did You Do With The Money From XYZ?"  You need to answer "You moved this money to anther retirement account or return it.

Then below you will check the box, that "you did a combination of rolling it over, converting or cashing it out.  And it will ask how much was rolled over/or returned.

You will entry this all in the 1099R area:

To enter pension and annuity Payments (1099-R)

  • Click on Federal Taxes
  • Click on Wages and Income
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
  • On IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R), click the start or update button
