When you enter your Form 1099-LTC, TurboTax will generate Form 8853, Archer MSAs and Long-Term Care Insurance Contracts, to include with your tax return. Form 8853 reports taxable payments from your LTC insurance contract.

To enter your 1099-LTC in TurboTax:
  • Continue your return in TurboTax Online. (If your return isn't open, you'll need to sign in and click Take me to my return.)
  • Click Tax Tools (lower left side of your screen).
  • Select Tools.
  • In the pop-up window, select Topic Search.
  • In the I'm looking for: box, type ltc.
  • In the results box, highlight ltc information, then click GO.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to complete this section.

Note: If using the TurboTax CD/Download software, you'll use the Find function and the "Jump to" link (instead of "Tax Tools") to search for the topic.

How do I enter a 1099-LTC into my return?  The instructions found in the search bar don't work and the drop down menus described are not what I see in my 2020 Turbotax.

MY PROGRAM DOES NOT HAVE ANY  "TAX TOOLS"  SO I CAN ENTER MY 1099-LTC

You can enter your 1099-LTC as Miscellaneous Income, using these steps:

  1. Click on Federal > Wages & Income
  2. Scroll to the Less Common Income section and click on the Start/Update box next to Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C
  3. On the Let's Work on Any Miscellaneous Income screen, click the Start/Update box next to Long-term care account distributions (Form 1099-LTC).
  4. On the screen, Any Long-Term Care Contracts? click the Yes radio button and click Continue
  5. Continue through the interview, entering the requested information.

TurboTax will generate Form 8853 - Archer MSAs and Long-Term Care Insurance Contracts.

H&B 2020 does not have a topic search.  Nor does it have jump to tools

Please follow these steps:

  1. Log into Turbo Tax.
  2. Go to federal>income and expenses>less common income>show more.
  3. Go to the bottom of that section and select Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C>start.
  4. Select Long-term care account distributions (Form 1099-LTC)>start.
