I'm on OPT, exempt from Social Security & Medicare taxes, but my employer withheld them. They said I'd get them back when filing, but I don’t see how. Can TurboTax help?

Can I get some personal assistant filing tax? I also have two W-2 forms.

You will not get a refund on your tax return.

  • You must contact the employer who withheld the Social Security/Medicare tax for assistance.
  • Inform your employer of the Social Security/Medicare exemption for nonresident alien students working on OPT or CPT, and
  • ask the employer to issue a refund of your Social Security/Medicare tax.

See IRS Foreign student liability for Social Security and Medicare taxes

If you are unable to get a full refund of the amount from your employer,
