I’m on a social security which I don’t really do taxes but I would like to do home heating credit. Can I do it on TurboTax online and have someone help me with it or no?

If your state gives you a Home Heating Credit, you need to prepare a Federal return (even if you don't submit it) and then prepare a State Return to claim the credit.

However, if you didn't receive your Stimulus Payments, you may want to submit a Federal Return for 2020 to claim them as a Recovery Rebate Credit

In the Federal Review section, you can enter the amount of the first and second stimulus payments you actually received.

Since you didn't mention what state you are in, in your State Interview, look for questions that ask about taking the credit.

If you want to Efile just your State Return, in the File section indicate that you want to 'print and mail' your Federal return, then you can Efile your state return.

I’m in Michigan. I do not know how to do Home Heating Credit (MI-1040CR-7) with math formula involved.

Is there anyone from TurboTax that could assist me with Home Heating Credit (MI-1040CR-7) form before I can e-file it?

Yes.  The Home Heating Credit (instructions at this link) is a way the State of Michigan helps you pay some of your heating expenses if you are a qualified Michigan homeowner or renter. You should complete the Home Heating Credit Claim MI-1040CR-7 to see if you qualify for the credit. You can click the link for details about who may eligible for the credit.

Using the link above, you should review the examples on page 5 to determine your standard allowance. The alternate credit is explained on page 6.

When you are in the Michigan (MI) return continue through the screens until you reach 'Take a look at Michigan credits and taxes'.

  1. Select Home Heating Credit (click the Learn More link for additional information) > Start/Revisit
  2. Answer any questions related to your Household Resources
  3. Continue to answer the questions
