I have two 1099 forms: one form a nonprofit board and one from a college. Can you explain why TurboTax makes me fill out a schedule C?

I received two 1099 forms, one from a nonprofit board I sit on and one from a college that contracted me to do a small job. Why does TurboTax make me complete a Schedule C? I don't own a company.

If you are an individual who received compensation for services performed and you are not an employee, then, according to the IRS, you are operating as a sole proprietor and are considered self-employed.  You do not have to own a company to be self-employed.  See more explanation and information below:
