I had solar panels installed. How do I apply that to my taxes? Turbo tax doesn't seem to have a place for me to add the associated tax form.

I'm working through form 5695 from the IRS, but I need info from the 1040, which Turbo Tax hasn't show me yet.

To claim Solar Energy Federal Tax credit on form 5695 in TurboTax:

  1. Open your return
  2. Go to Federal
  3. Go to Deductions and Credits.
  4. Go to Home Energy Credit.
  5. Answer Yes to Energy Efficient Home Improvements
  6. Answer questions and continue to the screen Did you have any of these residential clean costs in 2024? Answer Yes and continue.
  7. Enter the amount in the box next to Solar Electric Cost

Instructions for Form 5695 (2024)

Use Form 5695 to figure and take your residential energy credits. The residential energy credits are:

  • The residential clean energy credit, and
  • The energy efficient home improvement credit.

Also use Form 5695 to take any residential clean energy credit carryforward from 2023 or to carry the unused portion of the residential clean energy credit to 2025.
