I entered my pension dollars in turbo tax but it doesn't show up on my 1040-SR form?

Line 5a on form 1040-sr should show my pension dollars but it is blank.

Yes.   A pension that is all taxable will be on the 1040 line 5b.

Did you enter your 1099R in the right place?

To enter your retirement income, Go to  Federal> Wages and Income>Retirement Plans and Social Security>IRA  401 k) Pension Plan Withdrawals to enter your 1099R.

Yes, title at top of screen says Your 1099-R Entries. On the line "Total Withdrawals it shows the correct amount of dollars. On the screen with title at the top "Your 2020 Income Summary" the dollars show up in the topic Retirement Plans and Social Security.

Did it show up on line 4 instead?  Or somewhere else?

Line 4 is blank as well as line 5.

Oh wait a minute,  you said it's not on line 5a?  What about 5b?  If the taxable amount on 5b is the same as the gross distribution on 1099R box 1 then it doesn't show the amount on 5a.

See IRS 1040 Instructions page 26 middle column
https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040gi.pdf

It says........

If your pension or annuity is fully taxable, enter the total pension or annuity payments (from Form(s) 1099-R, box 1) on line 5b; don’t make an entry on line 5a.

It shows up on line 5b as taxable amount but nothing on line 5a?

Right.  Not if it is for the same amount.  The IRS doesn't seem to want it on 5a.  Only if the gross amount is different than the taxable amount.

When in Turbo Tax software program where you enter the 1099R information there is not a line 5a or 5b just a line 5 which is Employee Contributions.?

So if it shows up on line 5b I'm good to go?

Lines 5a and 5b are on the actual 1040/1040SR form.  Not on the 1099R form or entry screen.

This was super helpful. Turbo Tax should also place a note of explanation.

@richkay What do you mean you cannot make an entry on 5a or 5b.  You do not have direct access to the form.  You enter your information by using the interview screens.   Then the information ends up on 5a and 5b.

To enter your retirement income, Go to  Federal> Wages and Income>Retirement Plans and Social Security>IRA  401 k) Pension Plan Withdrawals to enter your 1099R.
