No -  under the CARES act, you do not have to take your required minimum distribution (RMD) for 2020.

If you had a distribution(s) from your IRA, you can indicate that it was NOT an RMD

  1. A few screens after the 1099-R entry screen you will see a screen, How much of the $XX was a RMD?  Mark the radio  button, None of this withdrawal was a RMD and click Continue
  2. On the screen, Tell Us More About This Retirement Plan Distribution, mark the radio button that you were not required to take an RMD for 2020 and click  Continue.

Did all that but after Federal Review at end of Turbo Tax it says I have to fill out form 5329.  What tat all about?

I tool 41,000 RMD was 43,000 say I have to ask for a waiver on form 5329 for the $2000 I didn't take.  I answered None of this was an RMD and Not Required to take an RMD.  It still says I have to ask for waiver on form5329 like (1) a reasonable mistake and (2) how are you going to correct it.  Crazy.  I've deleted the entry, put it back in....it doesn't matter...keeps forcing me to fill our lines in form 5329

Then you did not answer the RMD question that "None of this distribution was a RMD", or "RMD not required", depending on the question.       Delete the 1099-R and re-enter.

Thanks Macuser_22; I went back AGAIN and delete the 1099, save the return, quit Turbotax.  Restarted Turbotax and re-entered the 1099 with answers as you stated.....clicked out until Federal Review and ALL OK!!!

I know I did that before and wasn't successful but I guess, trying again and saving/then shutting down turbotax and restarting it then re-entering the 1099 did the trick.  So happy to get thru this finally. Been strugging for days on this one issue.  Thanks again for aiming me back to the right direction (again).

So, if I did not take the RMD in 2020 as I was not 'required' to take it in 2020, do I select:

- was not required to take an RMD for 2020 OR

- did not receive all the RMD for 2020?

Thank you

In my case I answered "Was not required to take RMD"
