Yes, you can upload a scanned 1099-R file into your TurboTax return.

To upload, please complete the following steps:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Search 1099-R with the magnifying glass tool on top of the page.
  3. Click on the Jump to 1099-R link at the top of the results.
  4. Answer yes to the question Did you get a 1099-R in 2020?
  5. Click continue to the page Get ready to be impressed.
  6. If you want to import your tax information, you can enter your bank name in the search box. If not, click on Change how I enter my form.
  7. If you are not bringing it over from your bank, you can upload it from your computer or phone with a PDF, JPG, or PNG file.
  8. Click continue
  9. You can upload your scanned file on the page Ok, let's get your 1099-R

Wow, it did work for me, using a scanned page, converted to PDF.

I did have to edit the state's payer #, since I had written that in by hand and it interpreted a slash as a 1.

Yep...always check every number

If I upload the copy, will IRS get a copy of the actual 1099-R, or only the basic info that I could manually enter?  I ask because the 1099-R, from OPM Retirement Operations, is a Survivor Annuity paid to me (as Administrator to an Estate), but has the deceased's Social Security # on it and not mine.  It also has an "Account # (Retirement Claim #)".  There doesn't appear to be anywhere to enter that important info into TT manually myself, so I've been trying to clarify what needs to be done about this.

You need to enter that information manually. The IRS won't receive the form if you upload that, and it can affect your tax return calculation, so please make sure the information form your 1099-R is properly entered.

Are you entering it into your Tax return?  If it has their ssn on it it needs to go in their final return or the Estate tax return, not yours.  Or you need to get a corrected copy from OPM.  The IRS gets a copy of the 1099R from the issuer also and will want to match them up.    @dmertz any thoughts?
