I am trying to do taxes for my daughter who earned no income(no W-2) but did get a 1099-Q. All of the gross distribution went to pay tuition expenses.

Turbo tax is telling me I owe federal and state taxes on this but I have read other information telling me I would not have to.  What am I doing wrong?

If you are claiming your daughter as a dependent, you will include the 1099 Q and the 1098 T in your tax return.

Your daughter does not have to file a tax return if she has no income.

To report the 1099 Q in Education expenses.

• Select Federal Taxes
• Select Deductions and Credits
• Select Show More at Education
• Select Start or Revisit at ESA and 529 qualified tuition programs (Form 1099-Q)

To enter a 1098 T in Turbo Tax:

• Select Federal Taxes
• Select Deductions and Credits
• Select Show More at Education
• Select Start or Revisit at Expenses and Scholarships (Form 1098T)

After you complete entering the 1098 T, you will land on the Education Summary page. Select Other Education Expenses (for all schools). See screenshot below. You can enter additional education expenses including room and board expenses here.
