HSA Contribution

I have a High Deductible Medical Plan through my former employer.  I am a retired teacher. As part of the agreement the school district contributes $3500 to my HSA to cover the insurance deductible. I am retired so I do not receive a W-2 from the school district listing this contribution. How do I report this information on my 1040?

The Health Savings Account (HSA) section of TurboTax includes information about distributions from your HSA as well as contributions to the HSA.

Use the following steps to go to that section of your return:

  • Go to the Deductions & Credits section
  • Scroll down to the HSA, MSA section
  • Click Start or Update
  • Be sure to check the box that you have an HSA account
  • Go through the screens asking about receiving Form 1099-SA reporting distributions
  • Next, you will be asked about  contributions  that were made to your HSA, either by you or through payroll deductions

As you go through the screens asking about contributions to the HSA, there will be a page with the title Did your employer tell you about any other contributions?  The third box on this page labeled Employer and payroll contributions not reported in Box 12 of your W-2 is the appropriate place to report your contribution.

Thanks so much for the assistance! The detailed steps helped me get to where I needed to be in order to get the employer contribution listed.
