How do I know if the 1099-R gross distribution is a RMD (Required min amount)?

If it was from a pension it is all RMD.  If it came from a retirement account like an IRA or 401k, and you do not know ---ask the plan administrator.

When you receive a distribution from an IRA, a Form 1099-R is generated at the end of the tax year. 

If the distribution is for your RMD for the year There will be a Code 7 in Box 7 of the form.
