You can enter California withholding from IRA distributions for both Vanguard and Fidelity on separate 1099-R forms in TurboTax. Here’s how to do it:

Steps to Enter Vanguard 1099-R in TurboTax

  1. Sign into TurboTax
  2. Select Income
  3. Then click this link 1099-R.
  4. Enter Vanguard Information:
    • Enter the gross distribution amount.
    • Enter the California withholding amount ($349).
    • Verify Box 16 (state distribution). If Box 16 is blank, use the amount from Box 1 (gross distribution).
  5. On the next screen - "Your 1099-R Entries" screen, click + Add Another 1099-R.
  6. Enter Fidelity Information:
    • Enter the gross distribution amount.
    • Enter the California withholding amount ($80).
    • Verify Box 16 (state distribution). If Box 16 is blank, use the amount from Box 1 (gross distribution.

TurboTax will complete the needed form for both 1099Rs and help you file your taxes.

Reach back out with additional details if something different was needed.

You enter the state withholding on the same screen when you enter each 1099R.  Did you already enter the 1099Rs?  Then edit or revisit the 1099R.
