Form 8889, Part I

Hello,

My husband and  I are retired and have been through 2021.  We are on Medicare.  We have an HSA from when my husband was employed and had an HDHP.  I have always filled out Form 8889, but this year we were unable to contribute to the HSA, but we did have distributions.  How will I fill out Part I of Form 8889 for tax year 2021.  Do I leave it blank?

Thank you

You will receive a 1099-SA for your distributions in 2021.  You will need to report this in turbotax, and answer the questions about how much of the money you used for qualified medical expenses.  Turbotax will fill out part 2 of form 8889.  Or, if preparing your own return, you will use part 2 of the form for your distribution but ignore part 1.

If you made no contributions then that part of the form will not be used.  The form is only needed if you have taken distributions.
