At this late date, the best thing to do is to delete the 1099-R and type it in by hand.
Oh, the way you wrote this question: is the state withholding larger than the state distribution? That would not be possible.
NYS withholding is 14.70 and the gross distribution is $290.00
So box 1 has 290.00 and box 14a has 14.70.
What does box 16a hold?
Sorry to jump in, but I had an RMD on a small account and the distribution was $115.67. I asked Vanguard to withhold the entire amount as a NY State tax deduction.
Now I can not E-File because box 14 (State Tax withheld) EQUALS box 16 (State distribution). I did not have to withhold the entire amount; I could have done this any other way. Why (rhetorically) is this a problem???
Anyway, I am guessing (because I am getting refunds) that maybe I will have to ask for an extension and sort this out tomorrow. Woof.
Any suggestions. Thanks in advance
