On the W-2 Form:

  • Box 18 is the amount of local wages.
  • Box 19 is the local tax withheld from your paycheck.
  • Box 20 is the name of the locality.
If the box numbers on your W-2 are different, enter the information according to the box descriptions listed above.

When there is not local tax some employers use box 19 as a "catch all" box to put information that does  it belong there or should really be in box 14 which is an employer information box.   Ask you employer what it is for.

Some employers still put state disability tax such as "CASDI 1234" in box 19, but should be in box 14.

My employer puts SX-39149 for box 19. When I use Turboxtax, it asks me to put in a numeric number. Should I leave it blank? Thanks!

I am in the same situation. Mine also says SX-39149 in Box 19. Should I leave it blank in Turbotax?

Box 19 of the W-2 should be a numeric entry, designed for employer withheld local income tax. It should also have entries in boxes 15, 16 and 20.

Do you pay a local income tax?

The characters you listed do not sound correct at all.

I have a W-2 with BOX 19 filled with SX-39149. How do I deal with this is TurboTax? Leave blank?

Also, Box 20 contains "DI P.P.#"  - TT accepts these characters

SC 39149 is a local code for SC. Nobody needs to enter this information on their W2. If this is your box 19, leave it and box 20 blank as SC does not have local taxes. Your employer was just passing along information to the state. The state has a copy of the w2 from your employer. Leave it blank.

Boxes 15-17 are not blank; they  show my state, wages and state income tax that I paid. Box 20 shows "DI P.P.#." Another person (Spiazza) on this topic sounds like he/she is the same situation as I am in.

In Turbotax, I left Box 19 blank because Turbotax takes numbers only for Box 19 and put "DI P.P#" in Box 20, but Turbotax returned both boxes blank. I entered all my information in Turbotax. It didn't complain, but I don't know whether leaving Box 19 blank is correct.
