Does a business list 401k contributions as retirement compensation to the employee, i.e., would they be listed as retirement cost

Yes, 401(k) contributions made by the business should be recorded as retirement cost.  This will go on Line 19, "Pension and Profit Sharing Plans" on Schedule C.
