The Form 1099-R you received is income to you and has to be reported on a tax return.

To enter a form 1099-R -

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
  • On IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R), click the start or update button

Or enter 1099-r in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to 1099-R

I have entered that information multiple times and it comes back and tells me to submit for 4852 when I have the 1099R from DFAS.

Yes, if you receive Form 1099R for military spouse survivor benefits received by you, then it is taxable to your and needs to be reported in your return as income.

You should not file the income until you receive your 1099R from DFAS.

You should be able to download your 1099R from the DFAS MyPay website as soon as they are available.

Generally you are not supposed to file using a substitute W2 or 1099R (Form 4852) until after February 15.
