Do I have to purchase an upgrade for a 1099 that I received from my current employer?

Free Edition is for simple returns that file a 1040 with no additional schedules. If you are reporting a 1099-Misc for self-employment work, it must be reported on Schedule C, which is not supported in the Free Edition.
