DO I HAVE TO ENTER A W-2 IF IT ONLY REPORTS CODE W FOR HSA CONTRIBUTIONS MADE BY MY PREVIOUS EMPLOYER (I AM NOW RETIRED). I DO NOT HAVE ANY INCOME.

Yes, if this amount included with other income would create a requirement for you to file a tax return.  If you received a Form 1099-SA, this allows you to also show any distributions from your HSA, if applicable, and enter the amount paid for medical expenses which is what eliminates the taxation of a distribution.

The filing requirement for 2021 is shown below.

  • Single, under 65 is $12,550 (add $1,700 if 65 or older)
  • Filing Requirements 2021 (Start on page 2)
  • See the chart below for most taxpayers

I’m still unsure. I know I need to file taxes since I have retirement income (have 1099 and investment income), but the only thing listed on the W-2 from my previous employer is the $1000 of HSA contributions made by the employer as part of my retirement benefits from the employer ( have been retired for 3 years). Since the wages on this W-2 are listed as $0, when I got to the end of Turbo Tax, it said I could not file electronically.

The amount shown in box 12 with code W must be reported on Form 8889 included with your tax return.  This is generally done by entering the W-2.  However, if doing so causes TurboTax to complain about a W-2 with $0 in box 1, the code-W amount  can also be caused to appear on Form 8889 without entering the W-2 itself by going to the HSA section in TurboTax, indicating that you put money into the HSA, that your employer told you about other contributions, then entering the amount as contributions for 2021 that your employer did not include in box 12 of your W-2.

Also check the W-2 to see if any of the box-13 boxes are marked.  If so, the W-2 must be entered.
